Cartagena de Indias is a city in northern Colombia, capital of the department of Bolivar located on the shore of the Caribbean Sea. In the city stands out the formation of the Cerro de la Popa (hill of La Popa) and its height is about 148 meters, and down.

Which is the best way to be transported within Cartagena?

 

The city counts with 4 important touristic areas:

  • Historic Center and Getsemaní (gethsemane)
  • Modern Area Bocagrande, Laguito (Little Lake) and Castillogrande (Great Castle)
  • North Area (Airport)
  • Manga (Port)

Within each of the sectors, all distances can be covered on foot, and additionally, the city has facilities to rent bicycles and segways.

Should you wish to move to another area, we recommend taking a taxi, identified by yellow color, in which paths have duration of no more than fifteen minutes.

For those wishing to take a kind of alternative transportation, the city counts with two story Red Buses, Trolley buses, chivas (typical bus), and carriages, on which you can take a tour by the city and its main monuments

Why the city counts with ramparts and great number of fortifications?

 

This is due to that by the time of the conquest and colonization, Cartagena de Indias was considered the most important port of the Spanish crown in America, and most of the wealth went out to Spain from this city. For that reason, the city had to be protected from attacks by water and by land.

Are there cruises arriving to Cartagena port?

 

Yes. Cartagena de Indias is considered the most important cruise port in Colombia, and is visited by different cruises (over 200 per season).

Additionally, the city is embarkation port for cruise lines with routes through the Caribbean, so Cartagena becomes an ideal base for those wishing to start a journey aboard a cruise.

Do shops in town accept foreign currency?

 

While some establishments accept dollars at Historical Center, it is recommended to have Colombian pesos available, or credit cards enabled for international use.

In different places of the city, mainly at the Historic Center, you will find exchange houses to make transactions. We recommend before making your transaction to verify at different exchange houses the applied exchange rate and always conduct transactions in a closed and completely identified establishment.

Where should I take the boats that go to Baru and Rosario Islands?

 

While the city has several docks, the Bodeguita Dock is the only dock Authorised for departure and boarding of passengers bound for the Rosario Islands, Barú and Playa Blanca.
